Update on Israel and Palestine War

By Samantha M

As of May 28th, 2025 the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially stated that Israel has killed senior Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar. The leader of Hamas, Mohammed Sinwar, has been confirmed dead. He took leadership of Hamas after his brother Yahya Sinwar was killed in an Israeli strike in October

Israel has stated that the war will be over when all hostages are returned and when Hamas is defeated or exiled.

As of May 13th, 2025 sources have revealed that 58 hostages are believed to be still under Hamas. Former released hostages have stated that hostages under the control of Hamss have endured physical abuse, starvation,  psychological torment and isolation in the HAMAS tunnels. An estimated 1,139  Israelis were killed during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 with 200 taken as hostages.

In Palestine, it is reported that an estimated 50,523 Palestinians  have been killed in Israel’s military campaign since October 7, 2023.It has not been distinguished between civilians and fighters but an estimated 20,000 Hamas fighters have been killed.  The Palestinian Health Ministry estimates some 10,000 bodies were uncounted due to rubble. 52,130 deaths confirmed by people presumed dead at hospitals in Gaza. This includes 34408 adults and 15613 innocent children.

The war in Gaza has become a human rights and humanitarian disaster and crisis for Palestinian civilians. Food insecurity, lack of housing, and loss of lives has plagued the entire Gaza strip. Kids have been torn away or orphaned from their families and many adults have lost children or their entire family.

There is no end in sight for the war in Gaza and as the war continues, more casualties may result for Palestinian civilians. UN agencies such as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency and the World Food Programme have delivered aid since the beginning of the war, but on march 2nd 2025, their aid was blocked by Israel. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which is  controlled by Israel and is a U.S.-backed Initiative has continued to  distribute food aid in Gaza, but has not been able to deliver as effectively and safely as the previous humanitarian organizations.

There is not enough aid to account for every person who is suffering from a lack of human rights. With no end in sight, diplomacy is the only foreseen hope for the end to this war.
