The US Strikes Iran

By Samantha M

On June 22nd, 2025, President Trump launched airstrikes using B-2 stealth bombers on three Iranian nuclear facilities. The planned attack is named Operation Midnight Hammer. The facilities that were targeted were Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz. The U.S. has reported that damage has been made to all three as a result of the strike.

President Trump launched the airstrikes on Iran with no warning to the international community, U.S. citizens, or Congress.

In response, the Iranian Foreign Minister has condemned the airstrikes from President Trump and has said they have the right to self-defense. The Iranian Foreign Minister also stated that the U.S. airstrikes were in violation of the United Nations Charter and International law. The UN Secretary-General also released a statement stating, “the U.S. strikes are a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security.”

Iran’s only response since Sunday was sending missile attacks to the Al Udeid U.S. airbase in Qatar. No one has been reported injured or killed. Qatar was able to mitigate and intercept some of the missiles but not all.

The U.S. and Israel have made it clear that they want all nuclear facilities dismantled and they want to prevent any possible creation of nuclear weapons in Iran. The strikes between Israel and Iran, and now the U.S. striking its own missiles, escalate this situation. Diplomacy and a nuclear weapons agreement need to be made in order to stop rising tensions and to make a clear path forward.
