On June 24th, 2026 Venezuela experienced a twin set of earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.2 and 7.5 out of 10 which is extremely high. The areas that were hit were Caracas and La Guaira state. NASA satellite imagery suggests almost 69,431 buildings may have been damaged or destroyed.
According to National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez, there have been a reported 6,509 fatalities. The total number of people rescued from the severe earthquake is an estimated 6,462.
Under the interim president, there have been 335 homes provided to earthquake victims so far, and they have pledged to provide 4,000 by the end of the year, however this is not a close enough number to the amount of homes people need.
In terms of missing persons, the lack of an up to date census has prevented Venezuela from being able to dictate an exact number of missing people but the number is estimated to be in the thousands. Families are still searching for their loved ones in the rubble and several online websites have been created in efforts to locate and identify missing persons.
This catastrophic earthquake highlights how buildings in Caracas and La Guaira may have been more vulnerable to this earthquake due to the lack of building code enforcement and overall poor infrastructure especially in public housing. In the future, Venezuela can improve the standard and safety of all buildings civilians reside in by keeping up building codes standards and implementing retrofitting of buildings to prevent this in the future, however, even if some buildings are up to code, severe earthquakes can still damage buildings.
